How to block the Reddit home feed

Short answer: Endwhile, a free Chrome extension, turns off the Reddit home feed and hides suggested posts and communities. You can also allow only the subreddits on your own list, and show, collapse or hide comments.

How to do it

  1. Add Endwhile from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open Reddit. The front page is replaced with a search box.
  3. Click the Endwhile icon for the rest: an allow-list of subreddits, subreddit front pages, user profiles and comments.

What you can turn off

  • The home feed, and suggested posts and communities
  • Subreddit front pages, so you only reach a thread from search or a link
  • Every subreddit except the ones on your list, threads included
  • User profiles, anyone's including your own
  • Comments: show them, collapse them behind a button, or hide them

What Reddit lets you do without an extension

Reddit's feed settings can turn off recommendations in the home feed, but the feed of posts itself stays, and so do the trending and suggested communities.

What keeps working

Search, threads you open from search or links, messages, and the subreddits on your list.

Questions

Does it work on old.reddit.com?

Yes. It runs on www, old, new and sh.reddit.com.

Can I keep a few subreddits?

Yes. Tick "Only subreddits on my list" and add them. Everything else is blocked, threads included.

What does collapse comments do?

A "Show comments" button stands in for the thread until you click it, and each new thread starts collapsed again.
